On loan from the Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art
The two videos were Latvia's contribution to the 49th Biennale in 2001 in Venice to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the city of Riga.
In the video “Riga Magic Flute” director Viesturs Kairiss and the artist and set designer Ilmars Blumbergs relocate the event into a forest in which the poor, the homeless and the unknown deceased from Riga are buried, a few hundred each year. The choir, in helmets and lamination sheet, reinforces the unreality of the scenery. One thinks of Mozart's death, of mass graves of victims of political persecution or war.
Laila Pakalnina's documentary “Papagena” shows Residents of Riga listening of Mozart's music. The film recordings emerged in suburbs and side streets away from the tourist Riga.
