Our contribution to Venice is equally a contribution to Riga. In 2001 Riga, the capital of Latvia and metropolis of the Baltic Sea region forms a special backdrop. 2001 is the 800-year anniversary of the city and it is has been selected as the Cultural Capital of Europe in August and September as well. This will be a package of grand fireworks and representative events. Initially though, very few of the officially selected and financed projects for the celebrations were based on thought inspiration as an act of problem enlightenment. We are showing two films, commissioned for the Biennale. The themes of the films deal with Riga and with the links of representative culture with people for whom this culture is completely alien. And, taking into account they were commissioned, the films' themes also deal with the borders of art's autonomy.
We assume that the modernist concept of autonomy gradually became confronted with certain ethics. This was formed not just after the horrific experience of the 20th century after which, it is said, poetry was no longer possible. Alongside the reaction to events, there was an equally powerful reaction to the fact that these events were not being thoroughly thought about. And there was a reaction to the fact that there was little thinking in general. Actually, already in 20th century avant-garde art, the tie with social life has never been broken because along with paintings and sculptures, there have been photographs, architecture, poetry and film. Both Latvian films for the Biennale make use of Mozart's music for the Magic Flute. In turn, the Magic Flute is the Latvian National Opera's most grandiose project in 2001 and it has provoked controversy because of its contemporary "open" language.
Filmmaker Laila Pakalni?a, a participant in the Cannes official programme of 1998 and winner of the FIPRESCI prize, has made the short film Papagena. On Pakalni?a, the film critic Dita Rietuma says : "The environment in Pakalni?a's films does not tend to be an end in itself. It "participates" in the fragments of reality captured by the camera becoming a meaningful sign. Someone, someone from the crowd, one of the coincidental heroes is offered the chance to listen to a fragment of the Magic Flute through headphones in front of the camera. We the viewers are offered the chance to be present at the creation of people's experiences: as some hear the music from this opera for the first time, as some sing along with it, and as others become confused. The Riga forming the background to these people is not the one in the picture postcards but rather an Antonioniesque city of graphic loneliness."
The second film was made by film and theatre director Viesturs Kairi?s and artist Ilm?rs Blumbergs. Both spent considerable time working on the opera production of the Magic Flute. In the film the opera is opened up - it is a short, strange episode where the Queen of the Night abandons her palatial apartments for an environment socially so harsh, that any reasonably situated person would rather not think about it. This joint effort on Mozart's moving images in Riga may be called documentary fiction.
The many years of professional experience of all three artists and their achievements to date in film, theatre and visual art is the basis of our project's international "convertibility".
